STUDENTÂ - EDUCATORÂ - ARTIST
QUALITY STANDARD 1
Teachers demonstrate mastery of and pedagogical expertise in the content they teach. The elementary teacher is an expert in literacy and mathematics and is knowledgeable in all other content that he or she teachers (e.g., science, social studies, arts, physical education, or world languages). The secondary teacher has knowledge of literacy and mathematics and is an expert in his or her content

ARTIFICATS & RATIONALE
Element A: Teachers provide instruction that is aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards, their District’s organized plan of instruction, and the individual needs of their students.

The artifact I choose for Element A is the "Objectives/Outcomes/Learning Targets" section of my social justice lesson plan. I wrote this lesson plan specifically for 6th grade because their Colorado Academic Standards are based around looking at other cultures, cultural issues, recognizing diverse points of view and how art address societal concerns. Students worked in groups to pick a social justice topic so that everyone could see peoples points of views and be respectful of each others opinions. This was a deep thinking lesson plan for my 6th grade class and each of their objectives related to Colorado Academic Standards for their grade level.

Element B: Teachers develop and implement lessons that connect to a variety of content areas/disciplines and emphasize literacy and mathematical practices.

For Element B I choose the "Literacy" section of my social justice lesson plan. This lesson required multiple instances of literacy throughout the project. First, students needed to work together to create a 4 slide presentation stating what they thought social justice was. Next the needed to state what social justice topic they were going to create and why they wanted to create it. Next, they needed to find artists that have created social justice artworks based around their topic. After students completed the project they were required to critique 2 other peers artwork that had to be at least 2 sentences long. My role waste help students get an understanding how how to critique and navigate social justice topics they might be interested in.

Element C: Teachers demonstrate knowledge of the content, central concepts, inquiry, appropriate evidence-based instructional practices, and specialized characteristics of the disciplines being taught.

For Element C I chose the social justice presentation that I created for my social justice lesson that I taught to my 6th graders at Coal Ridge Middle School. This presentation demonstrates my knowledge of my content and key concepts of the lesson. I discussed with the students the meaning of social justice after asking them inquiry questions based on there prior knowledge. I went over the materials students would be using and the reasoning behind the material options. I went over instruction with the students and what would be executed of them throughout the lesson. As well as daily expectations throughout the lesson. Students were also able to view other social justice artworks from various artists to get a better understanding and possibly some inspiration.

REFLECTION:
Throughout my student teaching experience I have focused on broadening my horizons when it comes to certain mediums within art. Being in new classrooms and being around new artists, I have learned several new and different techniques, lessons, art forms, and vocabulary. I feel as though this has helped me grow my knowledge of my content area even more so. Literacy in art is a necessity. Literacy allows students to reflect on their artwork and connect to a broader audience. Literacy such as artist statements and critiques are a big part of my lessons and allow for deeper thinking in the art classroom. Math is also a big part of art whether or not you know you're using math to create a project. Measuring, perspective and basic algebra come into play during several art lessons and students do not even know they are using math. I think art has a great way of masking the "hard" part of math and turning it into something fun.
